Mount Pleasant - The village will receive more than $400,000 in grant money that will pay for additional work on the Pike River Project and for new equipment for the fire department, officials announced last week. The Pike River Project will get $200,000 from the state Department of Natural Resources through a municipal flood control grant. The money will pay for erosion control, vegetative stream bank restoration, and planning and engineering fees. A $10,000 grant from the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network will help pay for an in-stream habitat structure, elimination of invasive species and the restoration and shaping of new channel as well as to widen existing banks. Trustee Sonny Havn, head of the storm water commission that oversees the project, said the money is welcome. "We apply every year, and for the past couple of years, we've been turned down," he said. "This was a very pleasant surprise." Phase 4b of the project is scheduled to begin this month and will include a bike path that connects with the current path running from Old Spring St. to Racine Case High School. The new path will continue south to 21st St., where it will connect with a trail that is part of the Racine County bike path. Construction is expected to last until mid-August.
